Jen Cunha is an attorney, animal cognition trainer, writer, and international speaker, focusing on animal literacy and communication. A “parrot mama” for over 17 years, Jen has been developing cognition training techniques for almost a decade. Her training methods have been translated and distributed throughout Europe. Her research has been published in peer-reviewed scientific proceedings, she’s been featured in Bird Talk magazine, written articles for the International Association of Applied Behavior Consultants Journal, and is a frequent lecturer at science conventions and companion bird gatherings around the world. Jennifer collaborates on animal literacy and communication projects with universities including MIT, Northeastern, University of Glasgow, Purdue University, and several zoos. Her birds, Ellie and Isabelle, have passed university-designed blind tests on phonics and reading comprehension skills and are considered the very first animals who have learned how to read.

We will be adding new care giver videos and information regularly
up until midnight on Sunday.

Frequently Asked Questions

YES! In addition to the thousands of bird Moms and Dads who have taken our classes with great success. Check out some of our research projects and publications: Click to see research project summaries Click for Jennifer’s published research And, our latest research project as shown in the NY Times: Click to be redirected to the NY Times (to read article you will need a NY times free login) Click HERE to see who else has covered us in the Press

A lot depends on your learner and your schedule. Start out with 5 minutes per day. Consistency is key. This is not a race nor an endurance test. Your learner will give you good indications of when fatigue or boredom is happening. YES, they get bored! So you’ll need to vary your fun activities.

We’ve had them all come through our classes. Each learner is unique but all enjoy the learning activities.

Yep! In fact, there is a superstar at counting, and he’s about 3″ tall.

After going through several tablets with less sensitivity, we still prefer the the 10.1″ Samsung Galaxy A (2019 model T510). They can still be found as refurbs (for Amazon links, click the ‘suggested books/tablets button below). Many ParrotKindergarten’rs have been using the iPad successfully for years) The protective case (highly recommended) Jennifer uses can be found on the same list of products.
Depending on the make, model, operating system – it may be possible. For example, on some Android models and operating systems, there is an adjustable setting in Settings > Display > Touch Sensitivity. Others Androids have the setting listed under Languages and Input. There are also apps available but make sure your model is supported. On an iPad the setting is Settings > Accessibility > Touch > Touch Accommodations
